Nirvana Receive the MTV Video Vanguard Award
On Sunday, September 27, 2026, MTV honored Nirvana with the Video Vanguard Award at the Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear went up to accept it, and Krist did the talking for all three. (Billboard, Rolling Stone)
Chuck D does the honors
The award was presented by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, a fitting choice since his group was shaking up hip-hop around the same time Nirvana was shaking up rock. He praised the band for never bending to the mainstream and said he didn’t think there had ever been a band quite like Nirvana. A montage of the band’s classic clips, including “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “In Bloom” and “Heart-Shaped Box,” played before the trio took the stage. (Billboard)
Krist’s speech
Krist gave the credit where it has always belonged. “The ideas for those videos all grew out of the vision of one of the greatest artists of all time, Kurt Cobain,” he said. “Kurt was one of one.” He added that Nirvana still connects with people “because people are still hungry for authenticity,” and finished with: “Kurt would’ve loved that legacy.” There was no performance; the band simply accepted the award. A long history with MTV
MTV announced the honor on the 34th anniversary of Nirvana’s famous 1992 VMAs performance of “Lithium,” the night Kurt teased “Rape Me”. During its run, the band won five VMAs, including three straight wins for Best Alternative Video: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (1992), “In Bloom” (1993) and “Heart-Shaped Box” (1994).
